About This Course

Course Objectives

The mission of Parker College of Chiropractic is to educate men and women of all nationalities to become Doctors of Chiropractic, who will be able to serve as portal of entry, primary health care physicians and perpetuate chiropractic education, research, science, philosophy and art world-wide for the benefit of all mankind.  Research Methods aids in this mission by developing in the student a beginning understanding of basic research and the statistical methods used to support it.  It also aids the students in understanding and comprehending the research papers they will need to read and cite to act as portal of entry primary health care physicians.
Completion of Research Methods should provide the student with a basic understanding of:
1.  How to read and critically evaluate research
2.  Experimental design
3.  Experimental methods
4.  Statistical analysis used in research
5.  Threats to the validity of the results
6.  Types of sampling
7.  Types of research
8.  Descriptive statistics and measurements of central tendency
9.  Measures of variance
10.  Inferential statistics
11.  Develop an understanding of the history of biomedical research and Chiropractic research specifically
12.  Learn the mechanisms in place in Chiropractic for both students and field practitioners to obtain funding support, or participate in research
13.  Understand the landmark research studies that formed the Chiropractic profession as it exists today
14.  Develop basic literature search skills needed to effectively use biomedical electronic databases to locate research

About the Instructors

Jennell Breshears, DC

Dr. Breshears received her DC degree from Parker College of Chiropractic. While as a student, she worked at the Research Institute, and joined the Research Faculty after graduation. She is currently working toward a Master's Degree in Health Studies. Dr. Breshears can be reached at ext. 7148 and her email address is jboyd@parkercc.edu. 

Ron Rupert, MS, DC

Dr. Rupert received his DC degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College and his MS from Troy State University.  He is editor-in-chief and developer of MANTIS, the premier chiropractic literature database.  A former Director of Research at Cleveland College, he was in private practice for 16 years prior to coming to Parker College.  He can be reached at ext. 7141 and his email address is rrupert@parkercc.edu. 

Will Evans, DC, PhD, CHES

 

Will Evans is a 4th generation chiropractor from Eufaula, Alabama, where he practiced for 18 years after graduating from Logan College of Chiropractic in 1986. He also received a PhD in health promotion from The University of Alabama and UAB with concentration in epidemiology and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. His interests include modification of intern and physician behaviors related to patient health promotion and smoking cessation research, including smoking ordinance modification and infection control measures for chiropractic offices.
