COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Laboratory dissection of human cadavers as well as human skeletons are used to reinforce lectures on human anatomy. Students are encouraged to use computer aids as an adjunct to anatomical visualization.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Gross Human Anatomy is a study of Human Anatomy from the Regional approach. The four regions that will be studied for this course are the Back region, Thoracic region, Neck region and Head region.  Upon completion of this course the student will be able to discuss the following objectives:

A.  THE BACK REGION: 
1.   To know and understand the structures and relationships of the components of the vertebral column. 
2.   To know and understand the structure and relationships of the fascia and usculature of the back. 
3.   To know and understand the structures and relationships associated with the Suboccipital Region. 
4.   To know and understand the vasculature of the back and their relationships. 
5.   To know and understand the structure and relationships of the Spinal Cord. 
6.   To know and understand the structure and relationships of the Spinal Meninges.

B.   THE THORACIC REGION: 
1.    Know and understand the superficial landmarks of the pectoral region and the thoracic wall. 
2.    Know and understand the structures of the pectoral region, the thoracic wall and their relationships. 
3.    Know and understand the movements associated with the Thoracic Wall. 
4.    To know and understand the Osteology associated with the Thoracic Wall and their articulations. 
5.    To know and understand the region of the Thorax called the Mediastinum and all of its divisions. 
6     To know and understand the anatomical structures of each division of the Mediastinum and their relationships. 
7.    To know and understand the structures and relationships of the Heart. 
8.    To know and understand the structure and relationships of the Pleura in the Thoracic Cavity. 
9     To know and understand the Lungs, their structures, relationships and differences. 
10.  To know and understand the region of the Thorax called the Mediastinum and all  of its divisions. 
11.   To know and understand the anatomical structures of each division of the mediastinum and their relatIonships. 
12.   To know and understand the structures and relationships of the Thoracic Diaphr. agm.

C.    THE NECK REGION: 
1.     Discuss and know all the landmarks of the neck region 
2.     Discuss and know all the muscles of the neck region 
3.     Discuss and know all the arteries of the neck region 
4.     Discuss and know all the veins of the neck region 
5.     Discuss and know all the nerves of the neck 
6.     Discuss and know all the lymphatics of the neck region 
7.     Discuss and know all the triangles of the neck region 
8.     Know the boundaries and contents of each of the triangles of the neck region 
9.     Discuss and know all the prevertebral muscles 
10.   Discuss and know all the structures that make up the root of the neck 
11.   Discuss and know all the viscera associated with the neck: thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, thymus gland 
12.   Discuss and know the larynx and all its structures 
13.   Discuss and know the fascial planes or the neck 
14.   Discuss and know the pharynx and all its related structures

D.    THE HEAD REGION: 
1.     To know and understand the structures and relationships associated with the skull. 
2.     To know and understand the structures and relationships of the scalp. 
3.     To know and understand the structures and relationships of the face. 
4.     Understand the Parotid Gland, its innervation, structure, and relationship to its associated structures. 
5.     Understand the relationship of the structures associated with the temporal region, infratemporal region, muscles of mastication, and the TMJ. 
6.     Understand the relationships of the muscles of mastication with the TMJ and how 7.     To know and understand the 3 cranial fossae, their associated structures and the relationships of those structures. 
8.     To know and understand the Cranial Meninges, their structures and associated relationships; formation of CSF and its movement through the entricular  system. 
9.     To know and understand the gross structures of the brain and its associated relationships. 
10.   To know and understand the structures of oral cavity and their relationships. 
11.   To know and understand the structures of the nasal cavity and their relationships. 
12.   To know and understand the structures and relationships of the Orbit. 
13.   To know and understand the structures and relationships of the Eye. 
14.   To know and understand the structures of the ear and their relationships.
