Course Description:

This course provides an overview of fundamental concepts in biochemistry, which focuses upon the major macromolecules and chemical properties of living systems. Primary topics include the structure, function and metabolism of carbohydrates; structure and function of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids; the physical properties of water, pH, and buffers; enzyme kinetics and regulation. Emphasis is placed on using biochemistry in the process of clinical problem solving.

Biochemistry I Course Missions, Goals and Objectives:

Biochemistry is the field of science that investigates the chemical and molecular reactions that sustain life. The goal of this course is to study these reactions in connection to their role in the clinical setting. As a future health care provider, it is essential that one has a sound background and a thorough understanding of human biochemistry. Throughout the course, we will discuss the relationship of biochemistry to nutrition, disease, and development.
