Course Description:  The course will examine the physiological mechanisms that regulate the renal, digestive, and endocrine systems, and the role they play in the maintenance of cell homeostasis.

Course Objectives: The objective of Physiology III is to impart to each student basic knowledge of the following topics:
  1. Body fluid compartments: extracellular and intracellular fluid compartments, their constituents and their relationships to one another.
  2. The formation of urine.
  3. Renal blood flow and its effect on glomerulus filtration rate.
  4. The process of filtrate formation in the renal tubule.
  5. The body's mechanisms for regulating fluid volumes.
  6. The importance of regulating acid-base balance.
  7. The mechanisms of acid-base balance.
  8. Regulation of gastrointestinal motility.
  9. The processes of transport and mixing of food stuffs in the alimentary  tract.
10. Secretions of the alimentary tract.
11. The gastrointestinal processes of digestion and absorption.
12. The physiological processes of the liver.
13. The physiological disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
14. The importance of dietary balance and its effect on physiological processes.
15. Metabolic rate and energetics of the body.
16. The production, effects, and regulation of hormones including, the  thyroid hormones, parathyroid hormones, hormones of the adrenal cortex, pancreas, and those of the reproductive system.
